Dear Reader,
We head into 2011 with very exciting news on the horizon for both our industry and for GRAPHISOFT. There is a revolution presently underway in the IT industry: the emergence of mobile technologies hooked up to the Internet through cloud services is changing how we communicate and ultimately how we do business. Information ― and the access to it ― has become a commodity, and users are demanding 24/7 access - even in the AEC industry. Technology experiments are already underway for BIM data as well; what is not yet 100% clear is the optimal level of authoring highly sophisticated data such as BIM models from mobile devices and/or in the clouds. The GRAPHISOFT BIM Server was the very first "cloud–enabled" BIM solution for live access to BIM projects through standard Internet connections. Check out our recorded Webinar explaining how this technology can be used in both large and small practices, enhanced with OPEN design collaboration workflows to the engineering disciplines. Tune in for ongoing innovations from GRAPHISOFT in the mobile/cloud domain in 2011. We hope you enjoy reading about other news and information from GRAPHISOFT's global community. Please don't hesitate to share your opinion with us about what you have read here or what you would like to see covered in future issues.

UK's first Certified Passivhaus educational building
|
The Rural Regeneration Centre at Hadlow College in Kent is a showcase of low carbon and renewable technology. One of the top three agricultural colleges in the UK, it will use just 10% of the typical energy consumption of a modern building and is the first such building in the UK to be constructed using prefabricated materials. The building was designed and built by James Anwyl, founding partner at Eurobuild, using ArchiCAD.

ArchiCAD-designed winery is an ArchDaily 2010 Building of the Year award winner
|
The design by Atelier Peter Kis of the Laposa Winery in Badacsonytomaj, Hungary, has won the ArchDaily 2010 Building of the Year award in the Industrial Category. The market entry and dynamic growth of the Laposa Winery resulted in the necessary expansion of both the wine-making and visitor areas. In addition to increasing the size of the winery, the challenge on both the architectural and viticultural levels was to modernize and at the same time maintain the production and presentation of the wine.

Award-winning Koutsoftides Architects: a small firm making a big impact
|
Koutsoftides Architects, a small, design-oriented firm, represents the majority of the ArchiCAD user base.
Its founder, Costas Koutsoftides's aim was to never grow big in size and profit, but to design what he likes and to do it in the highest quality possible. Awarded the meritable Republic of Cyprus Architectural Award, listed as one of the world's 101 upcoming practices in Wallpaper, and representing his country in the Barcelona and Venice biennales, proves that this approach is not only satisfying but also successful.

In the Blogosphere
|
One of the best ways to get practical insights on the use of software is by reading dedicated blogs run by users and independent experts. The number of blogs focused on ArchiCAD and BIM implementation is growing by leaps and bounds. The work of these dedicated bloggers is both motivational and educational. And the best thing is, that in addition to learning about ArchiCAD, you can also gain insights into design and documentation best practices as well, such as the example below about using Pens & Pensets.
