Dear Reader,
Welcome to the first issue of the re-launched GRAPHISOFT Newsletter. Our goal is to deliver news and insights about GRAPHISOFT and the global ArchiCAD community to our users on a regular basis. Three times a year, you can expect news from us about great projects designed with ArchiCAD, reports about interesting events in the ArchiCAD community and, of course, useful information related to the use of ArchiCAD.
Due to the global economic crisis, the last two years have been full of challenges for every one of us in the building industry. At the same time, the crisis provided us with an opportunity to reinforce our focus on mission-critical issues. GRAPHISOFT has always focused on innovations that provide creative, productive and enjoyable design experiences for architects. This is our core competence and has been our focus during the crisis as well.
The release of ArchiCAD 14 provides perfect timing for our newsletter, since we are now completing one of the greatest ventures since the ‘90s to reinvent model-based design for teams of architects and engineers. The GRAPHISOFT BIM Server is the best technology available today to share BIM projects regardless of size and location. OPEN design collaboration workflows provide a new level of transparency and integration for interdisciplinary collaboration as well.
If you are interested in learning more about these cutting-edge technologies, I encourage you to register for our “BIM Collaboration” webinar series where you can witness how GRAPHISOFT envisions the collaboration of teams of various trades and sizes from solo practitioners to medium and large practices. Also, if you are interested in trying it out yourself, simply register and download ArchiCAD 14 with the BIM Server from MyArchiCAD.com.
I hope you will find our re-launched GRAPHISOFT Newsletter a useful source of information. Please feel free to share your thoughts with us. Also, we would be more than happy if you would provide us with feedback on our community pages such as ArchiCAD-Talk, Linked-In, Facebook, Twitter, or YouTube. Stay tuned for more great stuff coming from GRAPHISOFT soon.

Meet the ArchiCAD 14 Signature Building - The Darmstadtium
|
Rectangular and simple - this description doesn’t apply to the new Science and Congress Center in Darmstadt! On the contrary -- the complex acts as an expressive, angular sculpture with a dynamic design. The building was named after the artificial chemical element, „Darmstadtium,“ developed in Darmstadt in 1994. The building changed the city dramatically, since it is located in a prominent position opposite the historic City Palace, which creates an interesting urban context.

Historic Shanghai Buildings Brought to Life with the Help of GRAPHISOFT
|
Shanghai's Museum of Contemporary Art was filled with the sights and sounds of Hungarian culture from August 23 to September 5, 2010. In addition to innovative exhibits highlighting Hungarian contributions to film, music, and design, the two-week exhibition featured a virtual tour of three of Shanghai's most historically significant buildings. Visitors could explore in 3D virtual reality the Park Hotel, the Moore Memorial Church, and the D.V. Woo House, which were designed by László Hudec (1893-1958). Built in the 1930's, these Shanghai landmarks are just three of the 65 buildings designed by Hudec between 1918 and 1947.

ArchiCAD and Talent Can Take You Anywhere
|
Olga Khamatgalieva, winner of the 2010 Best ArchiCAD Student Project held in Russia last Spring, recently visited Budapest to meet ArchiCAD developers at GRAPHISOFT headquarters and to rock out at the Sziget Festival, one of Europe’s largest music festivals. Olga, a fourth-year student at Southern Federal University in Rostov-on-Don, won the competition with her university library design. Olga expressed the experience as, “The trip to Budapest was unforgettable! I will remember this trip forever! Three days of pure enjoyment!”

Prefab-ulous Classrooms win ArchitectsJURY Competition
|
School renovations can create adverse conditions for teaching and learning, including the arrival of mobile-home-style temporary classrooms. Kristopher Celtnieks tackles this problem in his audacious “Relief School of Philadelphia,” winner of the GRAPHISOFT ArchitectsJury 2010 competition.

Tricks & Tips

TechTip of the Issue – Creating Non-rectangular Custom Openings
|
The standard ArchiCAD library is full of great content and is developing version by version (see the new objects in ArchiCAD 14). Still, it is the nature of building projects that you need custom objects every once in a while. ArchiCAD provides you with an easy, graphical way to create any type and form of custom objects. Check out this easy, four-step TechTip to create your own custom openings (even a gothic rose-window if you wish)

User Tip - Extracting Contours from Mesh
|
This ArchiCADWiki tip outlines a method for extracting contour lines from mesh. This can be helpful for extracting accurate 2D information from a complex mesh, which originally wasn’t modeled based on a 2D drawing, including 2D ridges. The tip can be also helpful if the Mesh was created using ArchiCAD 14’s new “Create Mesh from Surveyor’s Data” feature.
The article was originally published at Digital Architecture by David Maudlin.
