BIM explained in laymen's terms

BIM is an acronym that stands for Building Information Modeling. BIM is very much talked about these days in the building industry, but when asked you will receive more or less different definitions from different people?

Some say BIM is a type of software. Some say BIM is the 3D virtual model of buildings. Others say BIM is a process or BIM is nothing more than the collection of all building data organized into a structure database easy to query both in a "visual" and a "numerical" way. It is safe to say that BIM is all the above and some more… Now let’s see BIM explained in laymen’s terms. When it comes to BIM everything starts with a 3D digital model of the building. This model, however, is way more than pure geometry and some nice textures cast over it for visualization. A true BIM model consists of the virtual equivalents of the actual building parts and pieces used to build a building. These elements have all the characteristics - both physical and logical - of their real counterparts. These intelligent elements are the digital prototype of the physical building elements such as walls, columns, windows, doors, stairs etc. that allow us to simulate the building and understand its behavior in a computer environment way before the actual construction starts. Nevertheless with the advent of mobile technologies such as iPhones/iPads and the likes utilisation of BIM has broken out from the close circle of professionals. Clients, building owners and operators are getting more and more access to BIM models through their mobile devices even without the need to installing a BIM application first. What is BIM good for?

While there can be several different goals to fulfil by the creation of a purpose built BIM model that may differ both in their focus, scope, complexity, level of details and the depth of information added to the 3D model, of course the most trivial use of a BIM model is for making nice visualizations of the being to be build. This is good for both helping your design decision by comparing different design alternatives and for “selling” your design to your client or even to the local community that might have a veto about the entire building project.

Change Management - Since data is stored in a central place in a BIM model any modification to the building design will automatically replicate in each views such as floor plans, sections and elevation. This not only helps in creating the documentation faster but also provides stringent quality assurance by automatic coordination to the different views.

Building Simulation - BIM models not only contain architectural data but the full depth of the building information including data related to the different engineering disciplines such as the load-bearing structures, all the ducts and pipes of the different building systems and even sustainability information as well with which all the characteristics of a building can easily be simulated well in advance.

Data Management - BIM contains information that is not visually represented at all. Scheduling information, for example clarifies the necessary manpower, coordination and anything that might affect the out come of the project schedule. Cost is also part of BIM that allows us to see what the budget or estimated cost of a project might be at any given point in the time during the project.

Building Operation - It is needless to say that all these data put in a BIM model is not only useful during the design and construction phase of a building project but can be used throughout the entire building lifecycle helping to reduce the operation and management cost of buildings which is at least magnitude more than the entire cost of construction.

Why should I switch from CAD to BIM?

BIM and CAD represent two fundamentally different approaches to building design and documentation. CAD (Computer Aided Design) applications imitate the traditional “paper & pencil” process in so far as two-dimensional electronic drawings are created from 2D graphic elements such as lines, hatches and text, etc. CAD drawings, similarly to traditional paper drawings, are created independently from each other so design changes need to be followed up and implemented manually on each CAD drawing. BIM (Building Information Modeling) applications imitate the real building process. Instead of creating drawings from 2D line-work, buildings are virtually modeled from real construction elements such as walls, windows, slabs and roofs, etc. This allows architects to design buildings in a similar way as they are built. Since all data is stored in the central virtual building model, design changes are automatically followed-up on individual drawings generated from the model. With this integrated model approach, BIM not only offers significant productivity increase but also serves as the basis for better-coordinated designs and a computer model based building process. While switching from CAD to BIM is already justified by the benefits achieved during the design phase BIM offers further benefits during the construction and operation of buildings. What do I need to keep in mind when selecting my BIM tool?

Although there are several model-based design solutions available on the market today, it is important to note that not all solutions can equally fulfill the requirements for being a true BIM solution. The following set of questions help you judge if a certain solution has all the characteristics that set cutting edge BIM solutions apart from the rest of the pack:

What is the "depth" of the BIM model supported?
Optimally, the BIM model should be able to serve all deliverables during the entire building project lifecycle. There are various levels and depths to creating 3D building models starting from mass models used for schematic design through 3D models created for visualization purposes to intelligent “real” building information models. While models created for visualization only contain not more than the 3D geometry and material descriptions necessary for the realistic presentation of the building, real BIM models, in addition to the geometry, also contain an abundance of additional information necessary to coordinate, document, list and manage the building based upon its intelligent BIM model.
Does the BIM solution cover the complete workflow?
As noted above, “real” BIM models should incorporate all information necessary to create the deliverables during the building projects’ lifecycle. This also means that the BIM authoring tool should cover the complete BIM workflow without the need for changing tools and/or workflows in the middle of the project. Hence it is a vital question whether the design, documentation, realization and operation of the building is supported by the BIM tool beginning with conceptual design through design development, construction documentation to construction administration & management and ultimately facility management.
At what level does the BIM solution support interoperability?
In addition to being compatible with the world at the binary level (file compatibility) BIM tools also need to be compatible with one another at the process or workflow level. This is especially true in the event of interdisciplinary design teams that need to collaborate on the different design aspects of the same building. When selecting your BIM tool it is mission critical whether your BIM tool supports open standards and open workflows that enable coordination with consultants -- regardless of the type or version of their selected design application (BIM tool). Does the BIM solution support real-time model-based collaboration?
Building design is a team process in most cases. So should be BIM as well. This is, however, not a given, as BIM models are much more tightly integrated than traditional CAD drawing-based projects. Sharing design in BIM requires a whole new approach that involves active BIM servers that offer parallel, “real-time” access for an entire team. When selecting your BIM tool it is a question of strategic importance whether the BIM model and the process to creating it are designed in a way that supports real-time sharing for teams and projects of any size. Does the BIM solution sufficient performance for large/complex projects?
As noted above, the BIM model is much more tightly integrated and includes much more data than traditional CAD drawings. This necessarily implies that project-size growth has an exponential relation with the performance requirements. Whether a BIM solution can handle that growth depends on various factors including its ability to utilize latest hardware enhancements and the way it handles the model. When selecting your BIM tool it is an absolutely valid question what the maximum possible project size is allowed/recommended and whether advanced IT technologies such as 64-bit and multiprocessing technologies are supported at the same time throughout the entire application.
Does the BIM solution support local standards and offer sufficient local content?
Building projects are not only unique design pieces but the way they are designed varies between countries. Global BIM solution providers handle the issue of “localization” at different levels. Language translation is really not localization - it is only what its name suggests. When selecting your BIM tool it is your primary interest to be fully aware whether a BIM solution follows local design standards and has rich local content including intelligent building objects, local project and listing templates, and attribute sets following local standards.

What will happen with my existing MEP Modeler license in ArchiCAD 17?

The GRAPHISOFT MEP Modeler add-on's compatibility upgrade will be available as a free download to all GRAPHISOFT MEP Modeler users who upgrade their ArchiCAD license to v17. No functional developments in this compatibility update will be released.

What should engineers do with the Revit IFC I/O plug-ins in AC 17?

The free downloadable add-ins for Revit Structure and Revit MEP, developed by GRAPHISOFT, help map architectural and engineering models through the IFC-based export/import process between Revit and ArchiCAD. These add-ins are created for Revit and in this sense are independent from ArchiCAD releases.

How does ArchiCAD 17 advance OPEN collaboration?

ArchiCAD is certified for the IFC 2x3 Coordination View Version 2.0 export, making ArchiCAD among the very first to achieve this certification, and it is also 100% COBie compliant (buildingSMART alliance January 2013 Challenge, Washington, US).
The Coordination View was the first Model View Definition developed by buildingSMART International and is currently the most widely implemented view of the IFC scheme. Its main purpose is to allow sharing of building information models among the disciplines of architecture, structural engineering, and building services (mechanical).
The COBie (Construction-Operations Building information exchange) specification requires the support of the IFC 2x3 Basic FM Handover View from the design applications. The FM Handover standard is an extended version of the Coordination View (developed by buildingSMART) that defines the general requirements for design applications to enable the handover of facility management information. The support of COBie is important for our users' works not just in the US, but also in the UK and all other English-speaking countries.

Turn Architects' Plans into Complete Wooden Structures – Everything in a Single ArchiCAD Model

ArchiFrame is an add-on that extends ArchiCAD into a complete designing tool for wooden structures. ArchiFrame provides tools for wall framing,column and beam structures, intermediate floors and roof structures. With these tools it is possible to reshape planks and beams in any way to get the desired result. Everything is inside a single ArchiCAD file – including 3D model and 2D elevations with semi-automated layouts and listings. Individual planks can be hand manufactured using ArchiFrame dimension drawings and cut lists, or produced with CNC.

Management

Viktor Várkonyi, born in 1967, has been CEO of GRAPHISOFT since January 1, 2009. In this role, he is responsible for the global business operations of GRAPHISOFT. In addition he is a member of the Nemetschek Corporate Strategy Council established in January 2012.
Mr. Várkonyi has twenty years of experience in the IT industry and is specialized in developing Building Information Modeling (BIM) solutions for the AEC industry. Over the past twelve years he has held various executive positions and most recently led GRAPHISOFT's product developments.
Before this, he worked on the development of various breakthrough technologies that has been key to turn model based building design and simulation into the mainstream workflow of the AEC industry as we can witness it today.
Viktor Várkonyi graduated as a electrical engineer and holds a Master's Degree in Computer Science from the Budapest University of Technology as well as an MBA from Purdue University - Krannert School of Management.

Attila Seres, Chief Financial & Operations Officer joined GRAPHISOFT in 2008. Attila started his professional career with GE and held several finance roles in Europe and later at the US headquarters of the GE Corporate Audit Staff. He was also responsible for the Financial Management Program, coordinating the hiring, education and training of finance staff across Europe. Most recently prior to GRAPHISOFT, he was the Head of the Business Controlling Department of T-Systems in Hungary. Attila holds a Master's Degree in Economics from the University of Debrecen and has a Six Sigma black belt qualification.

László Drajkó, joined GRAPHISOFT as Vice President of Sales for the Americas, in February, 2012. Previously, he led Microsoft Hungary from 2007 to 2011. Before joining Microsoft, he was GRAPHISOFT’s International Sales director. László’s background includes management positions both in Hungary and abroad with a number of IT companies, including Axelero, Compaq, and Novell. He holds a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the Budapest University of Technology and studied Design, Planning and Management at Delft Univesity of Technology in the Netherlands.

András Haidekker, Vice President for Sales, Europe joined GRAPHISOFT in 1992 as a software engineer. He later moved to the sales team, initially responsible for the German-language markets. In 1997, he established GRAPHISOFT’s UK operation. Returning to Budapest, he led GDL Technology, GRAPHISOFT's Internet start-up. From 2005, he was responsible for sales in strategic markets. András holds a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Technical University of Budapest, a Master’s of Applied Sciences from the University of Quebec, and an MBA from Corvinus University.

Miklós Szövényi-Lux, Vice President of Business Development joined GRAPHISOFT in 1991. During the past years he held various positions in the Sales and Product organizations. He took over the leadership of the Product Management Department in 2007. Prior to GRAPHISOFT he spent 4 years working for a prestigious architectural design firm in Budapest, Hungary. Miklós holds Master's Degree in Architecture from the Budapest University of Technology.

László Vértesi, Vice President of Development joined GRAPHISOFT in 1989 as an architectural consultant. He contributed to the success of ArchiCAD in his several roles both within the development and the product management teams. Most recently he led Product Design in GRAPHISOFT. He started his career working for three years as an architect at an architecture & interior design practice participating in several commercial building projects before joining GRAPHISOFT. Laszlo holds a Master's Degree in Architecture from the Budapest University of Technology.

Eszter Czéh, Director of Human Resources joined GRAPHISOFT as HR associate in 1999, was named Deputy Director of HR in 2001 and Director of HR in 2002. Prior to joining GRAPHISOFT she worked for József Telkes Management Consultants. She holds a Master's Degree in French and English from the University of Pécs and a Human Resource Management degree from the International Management Center (IMC), Budapest.

Ákos Pfemeter, Director of Global Marketing joined GRAPHISOFT in 1999 as a technical support engineer. Shortly he started to take on more and more management responsibilities, first leading the Technical Support team, then leading the Client Services and later the Product Management organizations. Since the beginning of 2007 he has been responsible for the worldwide marketing efforts of GRAPHISOFT. Prior to GRAPHISOFT he spent three years in the building industry as an architect. Akos holds a Master's Degree in Architecture from the Technical University of Budapest and an MBA from the Buckinghamshire New University.

Tibor Sárdy, Director of Information Technology joined GRAPHISOFT as R&D associate in 1991. After working several years in the R&D department in different positions he was named Director of IT in 2001. Tibor holds a Bachelor degree in IT, alongside with various IT certifications and an MBA from Buckinghamshire New University.

This web page contains Add-Ins developed by GRAPHISOFT to achieve improved collaboration between ArchiCAD and other programs from various disciplines.

Improved ArchiCAD Connection Add-In for Revit Applications

Free Add-In developed for use by Autodesk Revit programs in the Structure and MEP disciplines. This application is recommended for use with IFC-based model exchange between GRAPHISOFT ArchiCAD and Revit applications. The Add-In for Revit applications variously enables direct import of ArchiCAD IFC models and IFC model export to ArchiCAD, or serves to optimize Revit’s standard IFC import and export functions used to exchange data with ArchiCAD.

Note: If you are using Revit MEP, we recommend that you use the Improved ArchiCAD Connection Add-In for IFC model imports only. If you plan to export HVAC elements only from Revit MEP, we recommend a special GRAPHISOFT-developed Add-In for Revit MEP, called “MEP Export to ArchiCAD”. See below at MEP Export to ArchiCAD Add-Ins.

Following installation, the application will be available from the Add-Ins ribbon of the respective Revit application.

MEP Export to ArchiCAD Add-Ins

Free applications designed to improve MEP element export from Revit MEP and AutoCAD MEP to GRAPHISOFT ArchiCAD.

Although Revit MEP and AutoCAD MEP can export IFC models using standard file handling commands, these Add-Ins provide additional features that will improve the export of MEP elements, by optimizing IFC models for the exchange of MEP elements with ArchiCAD. The Add-Ins enable you to save an IFC file that is specially enhanced for use in GRAPHISOFT MEP Modeler. When importing the resulting IFC files to ArchiCAD, GRAPHISOFT MEP Modeler will convert Revit MEP or AutoCAD MEP elements to MEP Modeler elements. Improved MORPH Tool

The MORPH Tool enables designers to create custom objects, components, and structures with extraordinary modeling flexibility in the native ArchiCAD BIM environment. The MORPH tool provides an optimal solution for creating custom BIM components, custom structures, and custom elements for the built environment and building interiors. Any geometry can be created in an intuitive, graphical way, featuring popular modeling techniques such as push & pull. ArchiCAD 17 introduces new Morph scheduling features supporting conceptual design and mass modeling. Architects can list the volume and surface area of single Morphs separately by story. This data provides valuable input at the conceptual stage about the useful area of the planned project.

Element Association to Story Heights

Automated cross-linking of construction elements may easily result in an ambiguous building project. ArchiCAD 17 enables designers to link certain building elements to stories in an architecturally sound manner.
The height of walls, columns and zones can be linked to a particular story in the project: when the story position changes, the heights of the linked elements will automatically be adjusted. This way, if the story height changes, the height of all linked elements will also be updated automatically.
Architects will still have the option to assign fixed heights to elements, and to define the base elevation height to a given reference level. This ensures that designers will stay in full control of their project.

Core Based Wall Reference Line

To support more consistent element positioning and intersection logic, Wall Reference Line options have been re-named and expanded in ArchiCAD 17. Users now have the option to assign the reference plane not just to either side of the wall, but also to either side of the wall’s core skin.
This way, when the user edits the wall (e.g. adds skins or changes the thickness), the wall core connections remain constant and the elements’ positions relative to their reference line remain unchanged.

Slab Reference Plane

Assigning a Reference Plane to Slabs means more possibilities and ease of use. The Reference Plane can be assigned not only to the top/bottom of slabs, but also to the edges of composite slab cores instantly. This way, when the user edits the composition or thickness of the slab, the position of the core remains consistent.

Curved Beams

Use the Beam tool to create beams that are curved on a horizontal plane. This way, beams can serve as support structures along curved walls. Such wall/beam intersections will automatically be shown correctly in sections (no need for solid element operations to represent them).

Real-time 3D Cutting Planes

Architects can define 3D cutaway sections of the model graphically in 2D and 3D views, using one or more cutting planes in any location and direction. Instantly focus your view on any floor, section or junction. This greatly improves not only the 3D editing process, but also the visualization of large complex models, displaying only relevant parts of the building in 3D view.

Library Enhancements

ArchiCAD 17 improves navigation speed among objects in general. As a performance improvement, loading libraries and viewing parts in 3D has become twice as fast thanks to a new caching process. 3D Coordinate Dimensioning, Stairs, and Railings have new appearances. The RoofMaker tool’s new graphical interface helps easier parameter setting. Door/Window placement has improved feedback. Google Earth and SketchUp Connection

Integrated connections with Google Earth and SketchUp allow opening or merging models from Google Earth or SketchUp directly into ArchiCAD, or exporting to these formats. The related add-ons are now fully-integrated in ArchiCAD. The Send Model to Google Earth function provides a one-step viewing experience. Merge the imported location coordinates or retain ArchiCAD’s Project Location data to place the new model relative to these coordinates.

BIMx in every ArchiCAD 17 Installation

GRAPHISOFT BIMx is an innovative, interactive, BIM communication tool for architects. BIMx has set new standards for design communication and presentation in the AEC industry, turning desktop and laptop computers, iOS and Android tablets and smart phones into full-fledged building model explorers. The integrated online model sharing community on Facebook and the new, cloud-based Model Transfer site allow all stakeholders to upload, browse, and download interactive BIMx models from any part of the world.

Its design was dictated by the existing urban terrain and originally consisted of two, slightly differing yet symmetrical pairs of buildings. The first of this pair was conceived and constructed as an urban accent to be seen from well-known observation points throughout Moscow.

BIMx Desktop Viewer

3D models created with GRAPHISOFT BIMx can be shared with anyone who has either a mobile or desktop version of BIMx viewer.

The BIMx Desktop Viewer is a native Mac/Win application that allows you to view the BIM Explorer models (saved in bimx file format) on desktop computers and notebooks. Please note that the BIMx Desktop Viewer application is included in the ArchiCAD 16 package so you don't have to download it if you already have ArchiCAD 16 installed on your computer.

Trial and Educational Versions

Starting with ArchiCAD 15 the BIMx application is an integrated part of the default ArchiCAD installation. This policy applies to both the commercial ArchiCAD versions shipped on DVDs and the educational and trial versions. These versions can be downloaded from the MyArchiCAD website.

For the commercial and trial AchiCAD users without a license of BIMx the application is installed in trial mode. The trial version works for 30 days and allows the users to save trial BIMx project files on their local computer. Trial version BIMx files can only be played on the local computer where they were created.

Installation

Please locate the desired language version and operating system from the following list and download the installer. Further language versions are uploaded continually.
Start the installer. The installer wizard will guide you through the installation process.

Important:When installing BIMx Desktop Viewer, you must be logged on as a member of the Administrator Group.
