Save as PDF option - how to disable the '_temporary ArchiCAD publisher'

Written by Gergely Kmethy, January 31, 2005

This article applies to:
ArchiCAD 9, build 1965 and above, PlotMaker 9, build 1965 and above
Windows 2000, Windows XP
All language versions

In ArchiCAD 9 r1/v1 patch (build 1965 and above) it is possible to change the way the 'save as PDF' option in ArchiCAD/PlotMaker publisher works.

The default working method is the same as before:
When starting ArchiCAD or PlotMaker, a temporary Amyuni printer is installed with the name '_temporary ArchiCAD publisher' or '_temporary PlotMaker publisher'. The 'save as PDF' option will use this virtual printer to create PDF output. Closing ArchiCAD/PlotMaker will uninstall the temporary printer.

Known issues with this working method:
  • a system restore point is created each time you start ArchiCAD. This slows down ArchiCAD startup and uses disk space. To configure system restore options, go to Control Panel/system and select 'System Restore' tab.
  • Users who do not have the right to 'Load and unload device drivers', will not be able to use the 'save as PDF' option in Publisher. To grant the right to 'load and unload device driever', contact your network administrator, or see a detailed description of how to grant Load/Unload right as a local security setting here: http://www.graphisoft.com/support/archicad/archiguide/PDFfileFormatMissingInPublisher.html/

An optional working method introduced in ArchiCAD 9 build 1965 hotfix forces the 'Save as PDF' function to use the permanently installed 'Amyuni PDF Converter' as the virtual driver. (If you selected easy install when installing ArchiCAD, Amyuni PDF converter is already installed on your computer. Otherwise you have to manually install it by running the installer in the 'ArchiCAD 9/ PDF Converter' folder) To enable this worknig method, you have to modify the registry value 'Disable Temporary Amyuni PDF Driver' Note: This registry value will be created only after the first instantation of ArchiCAD / PlotMaker.

To modify ArchiCAD:
  • In START menu click Run…
  • Type: regedit and click OK
  • In the Registry Editor find the key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Graphisoft/ArchiCAD/ArchiCAD 9.0.0 XXX R1/Driver Error Patch
  • In the right column right-click the value Disable Temporary Amyuni PDF Driver and select Modify
  • In the Value data field delete the zero and type: 1
To modify PlotMaker, edit the registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Graphisoft/PlotMaker/PlotMaker 9.0.0 XXX R1/Driver Error Patch

Known issue with this working method:
  • Since publisher automatically changes printer properties to fit the job currently processed, publishing with 'save as PDF' option will overwrite the Printer Properties settings (paper size, orientation, etc…) you have manually set for the Amyuni converter. Properties will be inherited from the last published document. This makes using the Amyuni PDF converter inconvenient as a stand-alone printer. If you only use it through ArchiCAD/PlotMaker Publisher, this will not be a problem for you.
