Can ArchiCAD 8 and PlotMaker 3 read AutoCAD 2002/2004 DXF/DWG files?

Written by László Nagy

AutoCAD 2002

ArchiCAD 8 and PlotMaker 3 both can read AutoCAD 2002 DXF/DWG files.

The only important thing about this is that in AutoCAD 2002, dimensions became associative. This is about the only major thing in which the AutoCAD 2002 file format is different from that of AutoCAD 2000. The conversion of this feature is not implemented in our DXF/DWG Add-On at this time. This means that ArchiCAD will read in AutoCAD 2002 files, but associativity data related to dimensions will not come through. Otherwise, it will know everything about the file it knew about an AutoCAD 2000 file. Of course, in PlotMaker, this is not a concern as there are no dimensions there.

AutoCAD 2004

There is currently no OpenDWG Developer Library available for AutoCAD 2004. We are waiting for the developers (it is another company) on this library to create this necessary tool for us (and everyone else). What is probable now - because we cannot influence how long it will take them to create it - is that AutoCAD 2004 format will certainly not be supported in the next version of our software. Whether it will be supported by the version afterwards of course depends on when they will be ready with the library from which we can work and how much time is needed to implement new features.
