Swiss Archicad User Wins Prize at Raic International Competition of Ideas

“Showcases of Culture” modeled and rendered in 3D using Archicad

Munich, June 23, 2000. In
addition to architecture firms
from the United States and
Canada, Swiss architect Pietro
A. Caviglia reached the final
round of the Royal
Architectural Institute’s (RAIC)
idea competition. The jury of
renowned international
architects awarded the second
prize and USD 15,000 to Caviglia
for his work “Showcases
of Culture.” All drawings were
created using Graphisoft’s
Archicad and Artlantis
Render for Archicad.

“In an era of artificial
worlds and digital media,
mankind withdraws behind
curtains and
empty cases. The architect is
the guardian of reality,”
believes Caviglia. “With
Showcases
of Culture I attempted to
transpose the interior into the
exterior. Archicad enables me to
work in 3D and to fit
proportions early on in the
design phase.”
The RAIC and the City of
Ottawa held this international
competition of ideas, seeking a
new
urban solution for downtown
Ottawa. They chose three blocks
opposite the Parliament for
the competition. This area is
located between government
buildings and a historical
shopping district, and contains
several empty plots as well as
protected historical
buildings.
Caviglia’s work complements
the existing stone facades with
new showcase elements. The
facades are transparent and
permit the public to view the
cultural programs and
activities.
The national identity is
projected outward, and thus it
becomes an experience of one’s
own
culture. Caviglia’s project was
praised primarily because of his
respectful treatment of the
historical buildings and for his
culture-oriented design.

Caviglia was born in Luzern,
Switzerland, in 1970. After
qualifying in technical drawing
for
civil engineering, he studied
architecture in ATIS
Horw-Luzern. Since 1999, he has
been
working as an independent
architect in Stansstad,
Switzerland. He first attracted
attention
internationally in 1999 with his
visual representation of “Luzern
and its Twin-City, Chicago.”
The young architect has been
successfully using Archicad on
the Macintosh since 1994.
The Royal Architectural
Institute of Canada was
established as a voluntary
national
association in 1907 to represent
the over 3,000 professional
architects and students of
architecture at the Canadian
architecture faculties. RAIC
supports architectural students
and professionals in Canada. To
that end, the Institute runs a
national information and
training forum to facilitate
development and the exchange of
ideas within the architectural
sector.
