Harvard Design School Adds Archicad to Its Network

Students Benefit from High-Speed Access to State-of-the-Art CAD Tool

San Francisco, CA – Sept. 29, 1999

The Harvard Design School, the nation’s leading center for education and research in architecture, landscape architecture, and urban planning and design, has added Archicad
6.0 to its high-speed network to complement its offerings of key-served
software.

Professor of Design Technology and Management Spiro N. Pollalis comments,
“We added Archicad to our network in response to requests from students
who had previous exposure to the program in their professional lives and
from students who want to use the architectural objects in Archicad.
It’s a tool suited for courses emphasizing geometric modeling and
multimedia at many different levels.” Professor Pollalis directs the
Master in Design and Doctor of Design programs for the Harvard Graduate
School of Design.

Archicad will be used in a learning environment where traditional
computer teaching labs don’t exist. Harvard Design School students
provide their own computers, which connect to the university’s robust,
high-speed ethernet network offering a wide range of services including
email, web, Internet and a broad spectrum of software. Network
connections and peripherals (scanners, plotters, printers) are available
throughout the Design School in every classroom, students’ desk and
library study areas; an approach that is in keeping with the school’s
tradition of an intimate, multimedia, workshop atmosphere for teaching,
learning and working.

The Harvard Design School does have specific purpose labs, including an
imaging center with a digital video component, and a CAD/CAM lab for
computer controlled machinery.

The Harvard Design School is a leader in design education and research
through its three major departments architecture, landscape
architecture, and urban planning and design. Established at Harvard
University in 1936, the School’s mission extends beyond classroom
education to engage students, faculty, business leaders, government
officials, and communities in discourse about architecture and design,
and their influence on our lives. Visit Harvard University online at
